Civil Engineering: A Short Review


        In the introduction blog, I already stated what the objective of the blog I create. This blog I will firstly introduce a very short review to those who are not familiar with this engineering science and its branches.

       To obtain such a clear and short meaning of the term "Civil Engineering", I start at the definition of this term. Referenced from wikipedia.org("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_engineering"), that Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and natually built environment, including works suchas bridge, roads, canals, dams, and buildings. These physical built environment are also called "infrastructures".Note on How Infrastructure Workscan be found in several books. It is also interesting to point out that this engineering science is the oldest engineering after military engineering.     

      About the braches of Civil Engineering, the braches or sub-disciplines of Civil Enginering include envionmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, Materials Engineering
, Coastal Engineering, surveying, and construction engineering. As you might see that this engineering science covers all most all of the important fields of study that really influences our life and society, or even the world! :)  However, those who are not a student or a profession in this field might see that this engineering science contains so many items to study. The items that I summarize are; for examples, physics and mathematics (a must), structures, materials science, geography, geology, soils, hydrology, environment, mechanics, and other fields (help me think please...). I can give you some mores like coastal engineering, construction engineering, earthquake engineering, and transport engineering.

       Back to acient period where this field of study is not composed of so many items. Civil Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence (actually I can say that this field of study couples with the beginning of the world or universe!)-explained more hereCivil Engineering Worlds. You might ever see that the early period of civil engineering (counting only for human period) is in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Irag). This period most people believe that humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. However, for my opinion, even back before the ice-age period where the human still lived in the cave. This kind of the occupation can count for the use of civil engineering. So why?  this is because Civil Engineering is also about the mechanics of soil and rock. Although the caveman never learn or know about the process of rock erosion and soil deposition, the engineering sense of caveman clearly see that "living inside the cave is safe (at least safe from rock falling-slope stability problem in Civil Engineering)".

      However, I agree that the human period of Application of Science and Mathematics to Civil Engineering  is from Ancient Egypt. Without the good knowledge in Mathematics and Science, we might be unable to see the great and great Pyramids withstanding all winds so many years long. The construction of Pyramids in Egypt might be considered the first instance of large structure constructions. Other ancient historic civil engineering constructions include the Parthenon by Iktinos in Ancient Greece (447-438 BC) as well. After begining period of the application of Science and Mathematics to Civil Engineering, you might see that the development and expansion of the civil engineering projects throughout the world extremely increases ( I could say exponentially), particularly, in the period of "computers".

     To end this blog,  the word "Computer" I  left at the last word of the previous paragraph would shred-light on you that WOW! this is also another item related to Civil Engineering. So I think you will agree with my thought more and follow on my blog more often since the integration of classical subject as Civil Engineering to this modern field of technology and knowledge will of course present the article in multidisciplinary ways. This multidisciplinary views and translate into a clear and short article in the blog will change the old fashion of Civil Engineering talks to a new kind of hot and enjoyable reading and talks.
